Required Certifications for Your Medical Career

There are many different types of certifications in the medical field. Most medical positions require training, and some require an associate degree. The difficulty varies based on the skills required.

Becoming a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) is one of the most convenient medical certifications you can get. You can get a CNA degree in only a few months! As a CNA, you will change bed linens, check vital signs and so on.

If you’re interested in becoming a nurse, you can pursue a number of degrees, such as a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or RN (Registered Nurse). You may also want to consider travel nurse programs if you love to travel, or if you’re interested in a more flexible schedule.

Another option is EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or paramedic training. This certification often requires at least a high school diploma. There are three levels of EMT training, including basic, intermediate and paramedic. EMTs and paramedics must also have licensure, which varies from state to state.

X-ray technicians, usually need an associate degree. As the name implies, X-ray technicians operate X-ray machinery, and help prepare patients for the machine.

Dental assistant training is also an option. Dental assistants can complete training in a short amount of time, sometimes in as little as six months.

A pharmacist certification can be completed in a short amount of time. Some programs offer a complete certification in less than a year. Pharmacists must also pass a licensure exam which is administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

Types of Jobs

There are plenty of jobs that you can receive online certification and work from home. Some of these include:

  • Data entry- When you work with data entry, you will be transcribing data from one form to another. You may be working with handwritten documents, audio recordings, spreadsheets, or number and letter sequences to build a program.
  • Medical Transcription- Medical transcriptionists work by transferring doctors’ audio recordings onto the computer so the document goes into the patient’s medical file. You must become a fast typer and have a wide medical vocabulary.
  • Medical Coding- Medical coding is different than transcription. A medical coder works with billing patients and uses different codes to transfer data.
  • Virtual Assistant- A virtual assistant provides technical, secretarial, and administrative support to clients, so you must be knowledgable about computers and technology.
